Elkin Canas is an American artist, born in Colombia and based in Miami. His work bridges tradition and innovation, creating a dialogue where the history of painting engages with the questions and sensibilities of contemporary culture. While his practice spans diverse media, painting remains his primary and most vital form of expression. Through it, he explores cultural identity, psychological themes, and subjects that, while intimate and personal, unfold into reflections of broader social meaning and relevance.

 

Canas received his formal training at the renowned Arturo Michelena and Giovanni Battista Scalabrini art schools in Valencia, Venezuela. In 2010, he moved to Florence, Italy, to deepen his study of traditional painting methods through the residency The Art Space Florence.

 

His commitment to education and community led him to co-found Chiaroscuro Studio of Art in Miami (2014) and later Miami International Fine Arts (2019), where he continues to serve as Executive and Academic Director.

 

Canas' contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, including a Certificate of Recognition for Outstanding Contribution to the Arts in the United States (Urbe University, 2019), appointment as Portrait Society of America Ambassador for Miami and Latin America (2020), a Diploma of Recognition for his artistic contributions from the City of Doral, Florida (2024), and a commendation from the Colombian Consulate in Miami (2025) for his role in promoting art and culture abroad. He has also been a featured speaker at the Figurative Art Convention & Expo (FACE). His international acclaim includes finalist distinctions in major competitions such as the ARC Salon, the MEAM Museum’s Figurativas, Galleria Arte Libre’s ModPortrait, and the Faber-Castell Salon.
